QUOTABLE QUOTES...
* "Siapa Mahathir?" ("Who is Mahathir") - M. Nasir, May 1996:
When these words were supposedly uttered by the songwriter/singer to a
reporter at a rehearsal for Malam Puisi Utusan - whose guest-of-honour
was Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad - the media had a field day making
him out to be arrogant and an ingrate.
It became the talk of the whole nation - Cabinet Ministers included -
even though Nasir denied having said it.
When he failed to turn up for the event the following day, the media
hostility got worse, never mind that Nasir's absence was due to the
fact that he had to attend his father-in-law's funeral in Singapore.
Needless to say, the Information Ministry "taught him a lesson" by
banning his works, until the matter was solved a couple of months
later.
* Lihatlah Dunia! Aku Anak Wayang! ("Look at me, world! I am the child
of the silver screen!) - Azean Irdawaty, April 1982:
Who can forget the image of the actress as she clutched her trophy and
wept copiously on stage, proudly declaring to the world that she was
an anak wayang!
Azean was named best actress for her performance in Langit Petang at
the 3rd Malaysian Film Festival.
* "If I were to change my attire, then tak adalah kilaunya lagi (the
name Kilau would lose its shine) - Datuk M. Daud Kilau, April 1991,
when asked if he would opt for a more sedate look, as opposed to his
flashy and flamboyant image, after receiving his Datukship from the
Sultan of Perak. (gua nya favret!)
* "They compare me with Anita Sarawak. That's unfair... I am me. They
want me to dance more. Look, I'm fleshy... If I dance everything will
jump up and down..." - Sharifah Aini, April 1978...
* "Compared to my mother, who is a beauty, I am a disaster." - Anita
Sarawak, July 1979, on whether she thought she was beautiful.
* "I did not kiss the dog. I only held it as directed. Allegations
that I had kissed the dog are false and unfounded." - Anita Sarawak,
May 1981, on the controversial Singapore TV programme which had her
singing Me And You And A Dog Named Boo with Lobo and, well, a dog.
* "I consider Sudir not `manageable' any more. He does not honour my
position as manager. I have tolerated this crap from time to time for
two years. Therefore, I terminate my services." - Mike Bernie Chin,
March 1987, on his decision to quit as Sudirman Haji Arshad's manager.
* "I do not bite the hand that feeds me. I had my own reasons for
letting the situation take the course it did." - (the late) Sudirman
Haji Arshad, April 1987, on his split with manager Mike Bernie Chin.
* "Patrick told me he was bringing in a guest on his programme to talk
about ducks. I let it go as I did not see how the subject could do any
harm. But I certainly did not expect this!" - former Radio 4
controller Amelia Teh, April 1996, on the controversial
"duck-on-a-hot-plate" stunt aired during one of Patrick Teoh's Rhythm
Of The Nation morning programmes. It was apparently an April fool
hoax, pulled by an advertising agency in conjunction with its 10th
anniversary. The "sick joke" was lambasted by the entire nation and
Teoh had to go off for while to, er, cool off...
* "Broery and I are very much in love and we want to be together,
whatever happens. His parents do not object to our marriage. The
question of religion will be discussed after we get married." - Anita
Sarawak, Oct 1981, on her proposed "mixed-marriage" to Broery
Marantika, a Christian. He later embraced Islam and that stopped all
sorts of rumours and death threats that surrounded Anita.
* "I hope that from now on, members of Search and Wings will become
role models for their fans with their new image." - former Information
Minister Datuk Mohamed Rahmat, Sept 1992, after members of Search and
Wings agreed to cut their hair. (Long hair was a no-no in Mohamed
Rahmat's book for those who wanted to appear on TV).
* "I can assure you there is no abuse of my position to acquire a
licence for it. It is purely for official use." - Mohamed Rahmat, Sept
1992, on the satellite dish which was perched on top of his house.
(Satellite dishes were illegal).
* "Maybe people have this image of me - small and susceptible - so
whenever I walk with somebody good-looking, they jump to conclusions.
For instance, they think I have a relationship with my manager. That's
crazy," - Sudirman, Oct 8 1989, on rumours that he was homosexual.
* "Do you want me to strip naked so that you could compare me with the
guy in the picture? - Edry Abdul Halim of KRU, March 10 1999, on the
nude pictures of him and Linda Rafar of Elite on the internet.
* "I know my daughter's body. That's not hers," Zainon Abdul Rahman,
March 1999, Linda's mother to a Press member on the same issue.
* "This is the greatest Tamparan (slap) I've ever experienced
throughout my 11-year involvement in showbusiness," Linda Rafar, May
16 1999, on the same issue.
